Text Editors for TeX
- Alpha
- Multi-purpose text editor for Mac OS X (AlphaX) or other systems (Alphatk).
Some features of its TeX mode: syntax coloring, macros for all standard latex
commands and environments; command and environment completion, \ref and \cite
completion, automatic indentation and comment handling, shortcuts for paragraph
and section navigation; typeset selection, support for compile automatisation
and smart error browsing; extensive support for manipulating .bib files.
Interacts with all tex implementations and previewers, including raw unix tetex,
xdvi, TeXShop, iTeXMac, OzTeX, and CMacTex.
- AUC TeX
- AUCTeX is an extensible package that supports writing and formatting TeX files for most variants of GNU Emacs. In recent
versions of XEmacs, AUCTeX is usually
already available as a package, though not necessarily the latest LaTeX-Mode
for emacs.
Some information on TeX on Win32 with AUCTeX are also available.
- Emacs for Windows
- Emacs is the extensible, customizable, self-documenting real-time display
editor. This port is known to run on all versions of Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.
- EmTeXGI
- EmTEXGI is a (free) shell for emTeX and associated utilities on the Windows
PC (either Windows 3.1, or Windows 95, with support for long filenames under the
latter). Apparently works under NT and may work under windows 98.
Probably obsolete, the page says "Last modified August 26, 1998".
- Ite
- A semi-wysiwyg TeX mode.
- jEdit
- jEdit is a mature and well-designed programmer's text editor that has been
in development for over 5 years. Written in Java, so it runs on MacOS X, OS/2,
Unix, VMS and Windows. Built-in macro language; extensible plugin architecture.
Dozens of macros and plugins available. Highly configurable and customizable.

- LaTeX Launcher
- LaTeX Launcher is a simple configurable shell utility to integrate and
"Launch" programs from various sources. It is designed to work within Windows
3.1 or Windows 95 (it has been tested with both). Although it can launch almost
any type of program (DOS or Windows), it has few features that are specialized
for the LaTeX user.
- Latex tool for Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP
- "This is a tool for typing and compiling latex (tex) files. A latex document could be edited, compiled, and corrected using only one frame work. It provides an easy way to work with latex documents that are compound from many files, and when an error occur the cursor goes to the line that generate it."

- In-line previews of selected environments right in
the source buffer of Emacs (see also the respective AUCTeX page).
- Prosper
- Prosper is a LaTeX Class for writing transparancies. It aims at offering an
environment for easily creating slides for both
presentations with an overhead projector and a video projector.
- RefTeX
- Support for labels and references (comes bundled with Emacs).
- Tablas
- Windows application as a plugin for WinEdit to construct tables.
- table.el
- A generic editing mode for tables with the possibility to export HTML
and LaTeX.

- TexEdit
- TeX syntax-coloring text editor.
- TeX/LaTeX Editor
- ""This is a semi-wysiwig tex editor. Greek letters and certain symbols (including the integral sign, the symbol for infinity, etcetera) are displayed using the symbol font. This makes tex files much easier to read. Commands beginning with the "\" are also highlighted."
- TeXnicCenter

- TextPad
- (Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP and Server 2003) TextPad® is a
powerful, general purpose editor for plain text files. Whether you
simply need a powerful replacement for Notepad, a tool for editing

the way you would expect.

- TeXtelmExtel
- TeXtelmExtel is a Shell for emTeX or WTeX and related tools under Microsoft Windows.
It includes a simple multiple-document editor. Besides
the predefined standard tools, up to 10 userdefined tools can be set
up. Its uniquefeatures are: built-in spellchecker, automatic OEM /
ANSI character conversion, userdefinable point-and-click Templates,
support for the Forward and Inverse Search mechanism of DVI Driver
for Windows and for automatic Font generation.

- WinTeX
- WinTeX is a MS Windows 3.1 (and Win95) shell designed for the emTeX package
and written by Jan Cupal.
- WinTeX 95
- WinTeX 95 is a powerful, easy to use, 32-bit Windows-TeX-editor with the fantastic, Highlight-O-Matic
syntax-highlighting-feature. Written by Michael Muecke.
- WinTeX XP
- "WinTeX XP is your TeX* / LaTeX* editor with MS Office look and feel. It combines the strengths of TeX with the usability of Word.
WinTeX is especially optimized for using it together with MikTeX but can also be used as a shell with any other LaTeX software (see CTAN LaTeX software for other TeX compilers and packages)."
- WinTeXShell 32
- This program is a free shell for the typesetting system TeX. It
runs under Windows 95, 98, 2000 and NT.
- X-Symbol
- This package uses a special font to display math,
and has its own mode for entering it.
- Xdvi(k)
- A DVI viewer that offers support for forward and inverse searching with AUCTeX.
